Nyrius LT12 Global Talking Translator

Space saver translator, the nifty and light Nyrius Global Talking Translator LT 12, is the latest cross translator that has hit the market covering 12 languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, Russian, Turkish, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese) with over 8,400 everyday phrases (eg: where can I buy train tickets to donde esta el baño?).

However, it does lack a keyboard to let you type in phrases, forcing you to use the unit menu tree for this option, the Nyrius LT 12 does fulfill well what it sets out to accomplish (i.e. speaking your desired phrase without the embarrassment of biting one’s tongue or mispronouncing phrases which could land you in jail…)

The built-in headphone jack allows you to hear clearly in noisy areas and is also useful in practicing your pronunciation. There are some drawbacks. The manual is only translated into the major 4 languages (English, Spanish, French and Italian) and the greenback lit area reminds me of a mathematical calculator that can be hard to discern in certain lighting.

But, overall, it is great for a traveler on a limited budget since it retails for around $40 and it does not take much room.
