Cons

This item does not have an actual iPod dock, so there are no controls on the speaker side since it’s just transmitted through an auxiliary cable. The package boasts that the speaker is “waterproof” yet in small print at the bottom of the packaging, it reveals that it is only water resistant or splash proof. The only real deal breaker for me personally is that you cannot control your iPod through it, but not having to worry about possibly exposing my iPod to water damage is a fact that makes up for this design flaw.

This is a great item to have for the shower singer in all of us. It’s a better alternative than replacing a cheap radio every few months and really works well , despite its flaws.

Grundig G5 AM/FM/Shortwave Portable Radio

When I began to review the Grundig G5 AM/FM/SW Portable Radio I expected a lot.  I was hoping to hear Gilligan’s plea for help or a shipwrecked Tom Hanks demanding a better script.   I expected Somali pirates, pirate radio, and every other reviled world talk to be within the twist of the dial.

Scrolling through the Grundig shortwave stations is like pressing the seek button on the car stereo during a cross country road trip.  Many stations feature the classic sounds that would prompt you to call the cable company, while Single Side Band satiates a fan’s thirst for beeps and chirps, only interrupted by Mandarin chatter and pundits.

Perhaps the Grundig G5’s shortwave doesn’t work well in the basement of an old horse radish factory with a novice at the controls.  There were a few buttons I needed to press to get more sensitivity on the shortwave.  Upon moving to a different location I was able to receive more stations, and the Grundig began to live up to its $100 price tag.  There was less white noise and sensitivity increased.  Scrolling through shortwave recalls a noisy subway car–an enigmatic array of sound and language.  But the Grundig G5 is not really for scrolling.  It meant for listeners who know what stations they want to listen to.

Moving on to FM, I was relieved to finally hear some Kei$ha and Lady Gaga, among other hackneyed dance tunes.  The reception was great with the 3’ antenna.  AM pundits came in with improved clarity.  Traditional AM/FM was solid.

A few features set it this apart from run of the mill radios.  I like the bar on the side that tells you the quality of the signal, which makes finding a quality station much quicker.  Other excellent features include the backlit LCD screen, the Local/DX feature, the line out input for external play, and the input for an advanced antenna (great for shortwave).

There are many instances when the Grundig G5 would be an excellent portable toy.  The Grundig G5 will deliver in desolate places where there is no broadband, when the iPod battery is out, when longwave only delivers a couple stations.  For simple fans of radio or ex-pats longing for sounds from home, the Grundig G5 is your ears to the world.

Chill Pill Mobile Speakers

Sit back chill and listen up to the little speakers that could. Today I’m reviewing the Chill pill speakers.

While unboxing the little pills I examined them from top to bottom and thought to myself these things are going to sound terrible.

I plugged the speakers into my iPod and fired up a couple of different songs of varying genres to put the speakers to the test. The speakers open up with a little twist, and rest on little rubber feet. I warmed the speakers up by listening to Frédéric Chopin, on a moderate volume level.

To my surprise I was impressed with how the little speakers handled the highs and lows of the orchestra’s instruments. For such little speakers the blend of treble and bass was excellent, I’m sure I could gain better results if I used my iPods equalizer options.

Moving on from classical to hip hop the deep base and lyrics of the songs, came across smooth. So… I’m sold! All around the bottom of the product and inside the docks there is a blue LED light that you can turn on and off  via a toggle switch on the side of the product. I’d have preferred small LED’s on the front of the stand just to let you know your iPod or iPhone is charging, although your iPhone/iPod has an indicator anyway.

Overall this dual dock charger does what it advertises and is quite convenient. It charges any iPod or iPhone without taking up 2 outlets, forcing you to leave a computer on to charge or buying multiple cables for each place you need one. The Hot Dog Hero is a plastic dog-shaped hot dog steamer that can cook up to 6 hot dogs in 9 minutes.   If you don’t have 9 minutes, don’t worry.  It cooks 4 hot dogs in just 7 minutes.   That’s a dog a minute drop off, but sometimes there’s a big difference between 7 and 9 minutes that 2 dogs won’t rectify.  The Hot Dog Hero has an auto shutoff if you’re the type that leaves the iron plugged in.  It even barks like a real dog to remind you when your hot dogs are ready.  Dishwasher cleaning is safe and easy.

The visual pun of the Hot Dog Hero is cute if accuracy is unimportant.  Obviously a hot dog is not a real dog–any confusion is dispelled by a rudimentary understanding of the source animal.  This Hot Dog Hero could be confused with a rabbit or even a turtle because of its small legs, its exaggerated lower extremity, and its Spartan doggie detail.  Most curious is the dog’s smile.  This dog not only possesses the capacity to steam pig tubes in its tummy, but is unequivocally thrilled to do so, and in a timely manner.

What the Hot Dog Hero lacks in species authenticy, it more than makes up for in kitchen functionality.  It’s meant to sit on a countertop, which a true plastic four-legged animal may have a hard time with over the long haul.  Don’t worry about this hero spilling.  The oversized stomach not only provides stability, but it’s where the dogs get steamed.  A thin, agile Italian greyhound would certainly not be able to steam 6 dogs in 9 minutes.  But if you’re having difficulty with the aesthetic plausibility of the Hot Dog Hero, you probably aren’t eating hot dogs in the first place.

Let’s get to the heart of the matter.  How do these hot dogs taste?  Well, if you trust a dirty water dog as much as you trust Bernie Madoff with your stock portfolio, the Hot Dog Hero saves the day.  It’s a good, inexpensive choice that will deliver the quality you deserve and save you valuable time.  Kids will love it because it’s fun.  I recommend the Hero Hot Dog to anyone with a taste for swine and camp.  Just no ketchup please.

With technology changing every day, it’s tough to keep up with the latest trends. Even if you do manage, how can you do so without breaking the bank? It is a recession after all, so we as consumers need to make wise decisions. So when I was on the search for a brand new MP3 player, I was surprised to find a full featured, affordable MP3 player that also provided plenty of bells and whistles.

The Coby MP705 Media Player is an affordable to way to stay entertained while on the go. With support for several media types, including music, video and photos, the MP705 is a full-featured music player, supporting MP3, WMA, WMA-DRM, WAV, TXT files, and even includes a built in FM tuner. Now, while this sounds good on paper, I wanted to dig deeper and put this unit through my everday routine to see how it held up.

The first thing I noticed about the Coby MP705 was its elegant design. The controls are laid out in a circular fashion along a touchpad,are intuitive, simple to use, and responsive. Above the touchpad is a 2” TFT LCD full color display that shows off the unit’s many features and capabilities. It provides access to the music files, FM radio and other options such as alternate language modes.

The unit I tested out had an 8 GB capacity, which holds approximately 1,000 songs. I plugged the unit into my computer using the supplied USB cable, to transfer music as well as charge the player. I used Windows Media Player 10 to organize the songs I wanted to transfer, and was surprised to find that I could transfer the MP3’s I purchased online from sites like Napster, URGE and Y! Music. Unfortunately, this product does not support files purchased from iTunes, but I still had plenty of songs to jam to on the commute home.

From the start, the MP705 surprised me. This player includes a comfortable set of Super Bass Isolation headphones that feature high performance Neodymium drivers, an unexpected but welcome addition to this package. This provides a deep bass sound and, because they’re noise isolating headphones, you’re sure to be rocking without any outside interference. The battery life was also impressive, lasting about 11 hours before it had to be charged.
